Fifty years ago there were very few people who believed there were diamonds in Australia – even fewer could have foreseen how the Argyle story would unfold.

Supply & Demand

  • Rio Tinto’s Argyle mine, source of 90% of the world’s pink diamonds, closed in November 2020.
  • Demand continues to grow from developing markets.

Like all assets, pink diamonds are driven by the laws of supply and demand. By chance of nature over 90% of the world’s pink diamond supply was mined from one single source: Rio Tinto’s Argyle Mine in Western Australia.

Having opened in 1985, exhausted supply eventually made further exploration uneconomical, with the mine ceased all mining operations in November 2020.

Since then, pink diamond prices have surged as supply becomes increasingly constricted in an almost entirely secondary market. With no let up in demand, this looks set to continue as the available diamonds are bought up by collectors, jewellers and savvy investors.

Demand from developing markets such as China and India keeps increasing, providing the opportunity to capitalise on exceptional potential returns in the medium to long term.

Individuals across the globe are ploughing millions into rare coloured diamonds as a stable, ‘safe haven’ asset class. People are loving them as an alternative investment.

The best-known pink diamonds are from the Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia. That mine, which supplies 90 to 95 percent of the world’s pink diamonds, will be exhausted by 2021, and the scarcity has driven up prices.

Times may be tough but in the world of pink diamonds, business is booming.”
